Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne has preserved a rich heritage throughout its long and prestigious history.
Come and stroll around the streets looking for listed monuments that make Saint-Jean-de Maurienne an essential part of the Pays d'Art et d'Histoire des Hautes Vallées de Savoie (Art and History areas of Savoy’s High Valleys.)

Saint-John the Baptist Cathedral (XI-XV century)
The shell of the current buildings dates back to the XI century and includes the cathedral’s framework and trusses which date from 1075. In the XV century, great bishops added a cloister, arches and a gothic chancel, a ciborium and stalls. Three centuries later, princes of Savoy constructed a porch.

The Cloister
Built from 1450 between the cathedral and the canons’ refectory (XI century), the cloister is covered by a tuff roof reinforced with gypsum ridges. This material commonly used for local sculpture is also used for the three lobed archways which open out onto the small garden.

The Crypt
Rediscovered in 1958, the crypt is today accessible via the cloister’s southern area. It is made up of a square room and an apse room which are separated by a wall with a circular opening in it through which the relics of Saint John the Baptist could be worshipped. Interlaced plasterwork and gypsum capitals with incisions enhanced with ochre are a beautiful example of early Norman architecture.

The Stalls
This exceptional gothic design from the end of the XV century sits at the sides of the chancel and the apse. Under their dais, the stalls shelter images of the apostles and prophets. An astonishing variety of patterns can be found on the misericords or the armrests.

The Ciborium
Located to the left of the chancel, this piece made from Carrare marble is from the same period as the stalls. The four evangelists surround the tabernacle (the golden door dating from 1497), which is topped by a stylish pietà.
The Tourist Office offers guided tours of the listed monuments all year round.
All the secrets of St John the Baptist Cathedral (XI-XV century), the cloister and the crypt will be revealed: different architectural styles, Carolingian sculptures, gothic stalls, early Norman architecture through the crypt…
