Saint-Jean: The Opinel Knife's Birthplace

Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne, place of birth of Opinel

Some history first…

The Opinel Knife was invented by Joseph Opinel, at the age of 18, in 1890. It started off with him making pocket knives for his friends, but they were so successful that in 1909 he registered his trademark. Opinel has since sold millions of knives in more than 70 different countries.

If you would like to find out more about the history of this famous knife, visit the Opinel Museum in the centre of Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne.
